Children are defined as having reached a Good Level of Development (GLD) at the end of the EYFS if they have achieved the expected level for the Early Learning Goals in the prime areas of learning (communication and language; personal, social and emotional development; and physical development) and the specific areas of mathematics and literacy.

Key Stage 1 2025

The Phonics Screening Check (PSC) is statutory for all Year 1 pupils registered at state-funded maintained schools, special schools or academies, including free schools, in England.

The PSC is a short reading assessment designed to check children's phonics knowledge and confirm whether each child is making the progress expected in the national curriculum.

Key Stage 2

At the end of key stage 2 (KS2), the national curriculum assessments are statutory for all year 6 pupils registered at state-funded maintained schools, special schools or academies, including free schools, in England.

Children will take national curriculum assessments (commonly referred to ‘SATs) in:

  • English grammar, punctuation and spelling

  • English reading

  • Mathematics

There are no tests for English writing at the end of KS2, but performance will be reported as a teacher assessment judgement based on each child’s overall work and performance against the Teacher Assessment Framework for Writing.
